 When I visited the local area, the locals brought incense sticks. I prayed for the happiness of those who died in a foreign country and felt the value of peace.

今でこそ日本、タイ間は直行便なら６時間ほどですが
当時の日本兵のみなさんは遥か異郷の地へ来られたと感じられてた事でしょう。
ましてや此処で命を落とされた方達のご無念は想像を絶するものがお在りでしょう。
お名前と共に亡くなられた人の出身地等も書かれてあり東北地方の方々が多いようにも感じましたが当時の部隊編成と関係があるのではと想像されました。
カンチャナブリーはタイ屈指の観光地でもありますが、この場所はひっそりとして
あまり訪れる人も無い場所です。
もし、あなたがカンチャナブリーを訪れる機会があれば是非立ち寄っていただきたい場所です。
（入り口でお線香等売ってますので何も持たないでも気軽に立ち寄って頂けたらと思います。第二次世界大戦博物館の手前にあり便利な場所にありますので）。

かつて、こんなに遠くまで来て、鉄道建設に従事した日本人達がいたのです。クウェー川の畔から沈む夕日を眺めながら、思いをはせたものです。
彼らは当時どんな生活をしていたんだろう。何を食べていたんだろう。現地の人とはどうやってコミュニケーションしていたんだろう。

This memorial tower was built by the Japanese Army in February 1945 to comfort the spirits of the Allied Forces and those involved who died during the construction of the Taimen Railway during World War II.
Japanese volunteers in Thailand gather here every March to comfort the spirits of the deceased people and hold a memorial service.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There seems to be some misinformation at this site. There are signs claiming it's for POW's. According to the Hellfire Pass Interpretive Centre this cenotaph was erected by the Japanese for the Japanese soilders that died during this project (in their duties as slave drivers). Which seems more likely than them erecting one for the people they spent 2 years dehumanizing, torturing and murdering.
I don't know what its modern purpose is or if history was rewritten but I went to every museum/monument in the area and found the one at Hellfire pass to be of outstanding quality with regard to its use primary source material so I trust them. I also found no reliable online sources to confirm either side so I am trusting the official museum. I would be really curious to get a clear answer.

The sign at the front says that the Japanese Army erected the memorial in ‘February 1944’ and ‘during World War II’ for the prisoners of war and others who died while constructing the Thailand-Burma Railway. History records that Japan did not surrender until August 1945. I doubt that the Japanese Army would have erected a memorial, and memorialised the death of POWs and slave labourers 18 months before the end of the war. The garden and lawn is overgrown. The memorial is poorly maintained.
