Uttamanusorn Bridge or Mon Bridge is an well-known tourist attraction of Sangkhla Buri. The bridge links the two banks of Songaria River and was considered the route of an international friendship between Thais and Mons because it links together Sangkhla Buri District to the Mon community on the other side of the bank.

Conceived for cultural unification, the Mon Bridge was built by a Mon monk and Mon volunteers to reunite with the Thai community across the lake. In the 1960s, a dam was built causing an old Siam village and temples to be submerged. The two dominant cultures we're relocated on different sides. The Mon and Thai cultures are distinguishable by language and traditions, but have lived in harmony together for centuries. Mon people have been persecuted in Myanmar, and have have always found safe refuge among Thai people. Monk Luangpho Uttama was the Mon abbot of the local Buddist temple. He initiated the construction of this bridge in 1986 with local Mon workers to fulfill the wishes of the two communities to reunite. The bridge is named Uttamanusorn Bridge in honor of the monk, but is commonly called Mon Bridge. The construction is crude and perilous, but it is enduring. Originally, the area was populated by the Karen Hill Tribe. The long history of Siam has benefitted from the harmonious communities of Karen, Mon, Khmer, Lao, Burman, and Thai peoples. Thailand is an amazing place to enjoy cultural diversity and kindness. May we all learn to enduringly celebrate the wondrous beauty of cultural richness.

Off the normal tourist routes, this was a very attractive place to visit. A dam has flooded a valley, creating a large lake. A morning mist burns off early when the sun warms up, creating great views. A long boat ride on the lake is recommended.

Enjoyed this place for a one night stay visit. Enjoyed the sunset views and also morning views, and enjoyed walking around the local markets and the walking street. There are local boat tours available but we didn't try that unfortunately. It would have been quite interesting.
