The Mahayana Buddhist Khmer emperor Jayavarman VII (1181 - 1220 AD) initiated the construction of 121 Vahni-griha or “Houses of Fire” along the routes throughout his kingdom. "Prasat Thamo" is one of these locations.
Some information about the “Dharmasala” discovered in NE-Thailand:
Seventeen Dharmasala were constructed on the route from Angkor to the Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary in Phimai of which eight are on the Thai side, while the remaining are in Cambodia. These rest houses were built in the Bayon style of late 12th to early 13th century. Spaced approximately 12 to 20 kilometres apart, they were an easy day’s walk from one to the next. Although the rest houses on the longer eastern road from Angkor to Chapa were built in sandstone, these on the Phimai road were in laterite.
They were constructed from laterite with only the door- and window-frames made of sandstone. Their size is relatively small, all the Dharmasalas very similar in size: Approximately 12 to 15 meters long and 5 to 6 meters wide. With an entry point on the east and west sides. The southern wall is adorned with 5 windows. The northern wall is solid, with a false door on the western end of the wall. The western part is adorned with a spire of approx. 8 to 10 meters in height. The top of the spire is adorned with a “lotus flower bud”. A pedestal for a religious image can be found inside the western door. The orientation of the eastern door varies from 50.0º to 97.5º - none of them cardinally, straight 90º east.
This is a reconstruction of what the “Dharmasala” would have looked like in its full glory (this image was found on the internet not one of my images – courtesy of “Voranai Pongsachalakorn”).
Prasat Thamo is off the beaten track, a narrow dirt track only suitable for single lane traffic leads from the main blacktop road. The turn is sign posted in English and Thai with a “blue sign”. The site was overgrown with knee length grass when the author visited the location. Prasat Thamo has deteriorated over the years the only remaining parts of the structure are the northern and southern walls. These have been supported with a metal lattice frame to prevent any further collapse. The windows (five) are clearly still intact within the southern wall, their framework and lintels being made from sandstone. Laterite and sandstone blocks are scattered around prasat lying where they have fallen.
There was a large piece of engraved sandstone lying approx. 5m from the western end of the north wall, this appears to be a part of the lotus flower which would have been located on the upper section of the main tower on the western section of the prasat.
According to the information board at the location there was once a moat surrounding the prasat with only a single entrance on the eastern side, with two ponds located in the NE and SE of the prasat entrance. Two ponds were noted during the visit one SE and the other in SW.
